East Side Gallery
The next stop on my trip was the city of the Poor but Sexy, Berlin! I took the train from Amsterdam, which was about a 6 hour ride. Though it was long, it was nice to be able to see some of the country side instead of just the hustle and bussle of all the major cities. Now since I was travelling over country borders with this train ride, there was a lot of ticket checks, about one per hour, which is understandable but also annoying when I was trying to get some sleep! Once I arrived at the Hauptbahnof ( main train station ) I noticed a huge crowd just outside the doors cheering and celebrating a recent win against another country in the World Cup Series – And oh man, do the Germans ever love their futbol. I made my way to the Wombat’s Hostel, where I stayed a total of 4 nights. I would definitely recommend this hostel to anyone staying in Berlin, the location is amazing, less than a block away from the Rosa-Luxemberg Platz, and the rooms themselves at the hostel were very clean. There at the hostel is where I met my Berlin Best Friends!! ( Hi Yazmine, Maude, Sarah & Rachel ) All of us were travelling by ourselves and happened to all be in Berlin during the same time and leaving only 1 day apart from one another. I found it more difficult in Berlin than the other cities I visited because of the language barrier, but the people there were friendly and tried to be as helpful as possible. Everyone learns about Germany in school and about all the history that happened, but physically being there is a whole other experience. Berlin has more memorials and museums commemrating their past than any other city I’ve visited on this trip by far. Its amazing to see all the buildings and to be able to walk down the streets of such a beautiful city, that has come such a long way. With that being said, if you plan on visiting Berlin, make sure you have the time to see everything that this city has to offer.
Auf Wiedersehen Berlin!
Brandenburger Tor
My top recommendations for Berlin would be
- Sandemans NewEurope Walking Tours – I went on this tour with the girls at my hostel, and it was absolutely amazing! It’s a free walking tour that’s about 3 – 3.5 hours long, they meet everyday in front of the Starbucks in the Pariser Platz ( where the Brandenburgr Tor is ) at 9, 11 2 & 4. This company does free walking tours in a lot of cities across Europe, where you just tip the guide at the end of the tour, and its also offered in different languages! As far as I know there is English, Spanish & French that is offered. I had Sadie as my guide and she was spectacular with her energy and her knowledge of the city, especially not being a native born German.
- East Side Gallery, Berlin Wall – One doesn’t go to Berlin without visiting the famous wall! The East Side Gallery is 1.3 km section of the wall and is possibly the largest outside gallery in the world. You see pictures of the wall within textbooks or across the internet, but it’s more amazing seeing all the hard work that the artist put into their pieces in person.
- The Memorial To The Murdered Jews of Europe ( also known as The Holocaust Memorial ) – This is a free memorial that is just one block away from the Brandenburger Tor. It consists of 2,711 slabs of cement varying in height. Underneath the memorial is the museum. There is no charge to go inside, and it takes about 1.5 – 2 hrs to complete depending on fast you read. It has stories following individuals and families that were part of the Holocaust.
