Johnston Canyon
It was an absolute beauty of a day!
It was + 5 & we wanted to make the most of it.
Lauren and I decided to do the Upper Falls Trail, 1 1/2 Miles = 2.4 KM
It’s actually interesting that the sign is in Miles instead of Kilometres,
considering that the trail is .. in Canada.
If anyone knows why, please let us know!

Walkin’ on logs & ish
Top Recommendations:
- Bring a backpack; This is about a half day excursion (including the drive there&back), depending on how much time you actually spend on the trail – so be prepared.
I had my hydropack filled with water, extra socks, tissues & snacks ( trail mix, granola bars, fruit ) keep in mind that there wasn’t many garbage cans along the trail, at least none that I noticed. So keep the food simple, you don’t want to be littering in the national park, or have to hold on to a gross banana peel until you’ve finished the hike. - Dress warmly; You can never be too certain of what the weathers gonna be like, especially in & around Calgary, that’s for sure. It was a beautiful sunny sky on the drive there, until we actually got to the mountains where it was wet and snowing. So remember, layers! Check the weather before you plan your trip & use your common sense. And please for the love of God, wear the proper footwear, ( I counted at least 5 people wearing Uggs ….. ) you’re going on a hike!!
- Crampons; These are a definite plus to have, but not necessary. You don’t need the crazy expensive metal ones, unless you are an intense winter hiker. You can get the over the shoe rubber ones for a pretty affordable price ( $13.99 @ Costco )
They prevent you from skidding on the snow/ice, and yes there are some slippery parts.
Be smart, hold the railing, walk slow & have your buddy with you.
Frozen Waterfalls
Ice Climber!
The whole place makes for a great backdrop,
but even my pictures don’t do it justice.
It’s a must-see-it-for-yourself kinda thing, and a wonderful reminder of how lucky we are to live in such a beautiful place! I’ll definitely be back to complete the hike in the summer.
