Maritimes ’21

Better late than never right?

The past few years have been hard, unexpected, and a challenge in more ways than I can count. With a surging pandemic quickly affecting the world, normal life would change as we know it. And one of the things that I enjoyed most in the world, travelling, was put to a halt for the foreseeable future.

I was lucky enough to still get my dose of travelling in 2021, albeit in Canada but hey, I took what I could get.

HMCS Sackville – Canada’s Naval Memorial

I’ve always wanted a change to explore more of the beautiful country that I get to call home – but other opportunities always seemed more appealing which is why the East Coast aka the Maritimes kept getting bumped lower on my “must-see” list. Until now.

First stop on the trip was Halifax, Nova Scotia.

While primarily a university town (or retiree’s I noticed), there are a handful of recommendations that I would make to anyone planning to visit:

Old Town Clock
Citadel National Historic Site
Maritime Museum of the Atlantic
Shakespeare by the Sea

My favourite of the above was the Maritime Museum. I try to visit one in each new place I visit, and this one did not disappoint! If you didn’t know, I love the movie Titanic. I would say I was borderline obsessed when I was younger. Also I realize now that it likely wasn’t an age appropriate movie for me to watch at the time but oh well. This museum had a whole segment dedicated to the Titanic and it was so fascinating reading and seeing pieces of such a well known part of history.

Next stop, I hopped on the VIA Rail Train to New Brunswick!

While my time in NB was very short (one night in Moncton and one night in Shediac) – I would highly recommend eating at Gusto Italian Grill & Bar! It was absolutely delicious.

And if you have access to a vehicle, to stop off at Pointe-du-chene Wharf. The views are great and there are some restaurants, and little shops to peruse through along the water. A really cute way to spend an afternoon.

And now for the main reason of my trip to the east coast .. to visit my bbffaeae!

When I tell you that Prince Edward Island is special, I mean it. I never would have thought that I would be amazed so much by this tiny little island.

All of my time here was spent with my childhood bestfriend / neighbour, Lish. I believe the last time we saw each other before this was Indonesia in 2019, which is far too long apart.

Thunder Cove Beach Retreat

If you don’t have it on your list, please add PEI to your list of places to visit in the summer.

It may be tiny but the island has a lot to offer. The beaches, the slow kinda island living, the (sea)food is unbelievable! I might have done myself a disservice as now I compare all seafood to that of PEI, and potatoes. Did you know Cavendish potatoes come from PEI?! I had no idea! Look for them the next time you are purchasing groceries. Promise you won’t be disappointed.

Check out Canada’s Rotating House – Around The Sea if you get the chance! It is exactly that, a (huge) house, that rotates. It was pretty neat to see. Apart from that, you won’t go wrong with just walking along Peake’s Wharf and finding any restaurant to pop into. Tons of live music on the street too. A very lively place to visit in the summertime that’s postcard perfect.

Dreaming of the next time I have fresh PEI Lobster

Until next time!

With love,
Murs
